Pokémon Detective Pikachu
POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU –
A PLAYFUL AND ADMIRABLE ROLLERCOASTER RIDE FOR POKÉMON FANS
Movie Review by Rafiaa Khan (Rocheston Certified Movie Critic)
Directed by Rob Letterman, this PG-rated movie is based on the 2016 Nintendo DS game. The movie showcases an interesting and cleverly portrayed world where Pokémon and humans live together in harmony. Ever since the launch of the trailer, it undoubtedly has been on every Pokémon fan’s bucket list to watch a live-action Pokémon movie and this movie sure does not disappoint.
The movie is solely based on Tim Goodman, a young Pokémon enthusiast who goes on a journey with his father’s Pokémon partner Pikachu in search of his missing father, Harry Goodman. On their quest they discover a Pokémon conspiracy that would terrorize the Pokémon world. The plot is well-crafted as they go about tackling obstacles that come up their way and working as a team to find the answers that would decide their futures. It could also be described as a coming of age story that teaches a strong lesson on why to not dwell on your past.
The special effects of the movie are commendable, as effort has been put in to creating the Pokémon that we have grown to love. The CGI is impeccable, especially with the progress made in 3D modelling technology. The CGI of the movie has been exceptionally adapted as we see Pokémon act and appear as if in real life.
Ryan Reynolds, who voices Pikachu, helps bring it to life with his snarky humour a few bunch of laughs. He helps make this movie a lot more comedic than Pokémon could ever have been. Reynolds gives this movie a light-hearted feel despite the intense scenes that come around every passing moment. Justice Smith, who plays Tim did an incredible job and will leave you becoming a fan by the end of the movie. Kathryn Newton as the leading lady adds an adorable factor to the dark mystery movie and lights up the screen every time she comes on to the screen. The dynamics between Justice and Ryan is quite special and will make you root for them all the way.
Pokémon fans would most definitely jump with excitement every time a new Pokémon shows up on the screen. The film has so many Pokémon references that will surely keep audience on their toes. The film also has many fight scenes which have been toned down to make it suitable for kids and adults alike. There is a lot of adult humour, but it is done in a way that it would fly right over the kids heads, while it will leave adults silently cackling.
The movie has a mystery sequence that will keep you guessing till the last second. The final reveal at the end will surely surprise everyone and is the perfect ending for the never-ending conundrum. You go in for nostalgia and to relive your old Pokémon days, but you walk out with much more, a whole new outlook on Pokémon. The soundtrack was excellent and really helps support the mysterious elements of the movie. Pokémon geek or not, this movie is sure to entertain people of all ages. It would be safe to say that this movie is one of the best video game adaptations out there.
